"Top of Class" and more
29th October 2008
Australia’s Wingara Wine Group has performed well across all brands at the 2008 International Wine and Spirit Competition, winning:
- two Best in Class silver medals, awarded to Katnook Estate Merlot 2005 and the newly released Katnook Prodigy Shiraz 2005;
- two silver medals, awarded to Katnook Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 and Katnook Odyssey Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 and
- fourteen bronze medals, six awarded to Deakin Estate, two to Crackerjack, three to Katnook Estate and three to Katnook Founder's Block.
Silver medal winners scored between 80 and 89.9 points, with “Best in Class” silver medals awarded to the highest mark in the Silver range if no gold was given. Silver medal winners are considered “fine examples; excellent quality.” These results support Katnook Estate’s commitment to offering Classic Coonawarra wine styles, which sit comfortably on the world stage.
Bronze medals were awarded to wines scoring between 70 and 79.9 points and these wines are described as “good examples, well above average.” With Deakin Estate wines retailing at $10, collecting 6 bronze medals is a pleasing result. Crackerjack is the newest brand to join the Wingara portfolio. This international recognition after only two vintages is encouraging and a testament to the winemaking team.
Founded in 1969 and held in London, The International Wine and Spirit Competition is unique in that all wines are blind tasted in groups divided by variety, region and vintage. Awards are made on a points system and technical analysis is carried out on Gold, Gold (Best in Class), Silver (Best in Class) award winning wines to ensure they are technically sound and will be of the same high quality when they reach the consumer as they were when our judging panels originally tasted them.
Entries to the Competition must be available in commercial quantities to eliminate the possibility of "show" products participating and must be from an identifiable batch or lot. For further information, visit www.iwsc.net
